Grand Theft Auto VI has finally moved into its commercial launch phase. Rockstar Games has opened pre-orders, confirmed its two launch editions and put an end to the longest-running GTA 6 price rumor: the standard edition will not cost $100.
That does not mean the conversation around the game has cooled down. GTA 6 is still set to be one of 2026’s biggest releases, but its $79.99 starting price, $99.99 Ultimate Edition and disc-free physical box have already created a fresh debate among players.
GTA 6 release date and launch window
Although it was originally expected for late 2025 and later pushed to mid-2026, Rockstar Games recently announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on November 19, 2026.
The company explained that the delay is due to its pursuit of the highest possible technical and narrative quality. In a statement, the studio said the title “will represent something never before seen in the history of interactive entertainment.”
While this date seems final, internal adjustments are still possible if development requires extra polish. Either way, when is GTA 6 coming out? Nov 2026 is the answer, a full decade after GTA V first released. The date is now locked in Rockstar’s official launch material, and pre-orders are already available for its console release.

GTA 6 price: Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition explained
Rockstar has confirmed two launch editions:
- GTA 6 Standard Edition: $79.99 / £69.99 / €79.99
- GTA 6 Ultimate Edition: $99.99 / £89.99 / €99.99
The Standard Edition includes the full game. The Ultimate Edition adds a set of story-linked bonuses, including vehicles, weapon variants, clothing, garages, mod shops, a tattoo parlour, a salon and other unlocks spread across Jason and Lucia’s campaign.
Players who choose the Standard Edition will also be able to buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately later. That is useful for anyone who wants to avoid paying the higher price at launch, although it also reinforces one of the criticisms surrounding the game: Rockstar is putting some cosmetic and progression-related extras behind a premium tier.
Digital pre-orders made before November 20 also include the Vintage Vice City Pack, with a Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage, outfits, hairstyles, an exclusive weapon pattern and one month of GTA+ membership.
Why GTA 6’s price has become controversial
For months, one of the biggest rumours around GTA 6 was that Rockstar could use the game to push the standard AAA price to $100. That has not happened: the base edition costs $79.99 in the US. Still, the price has remained controversial for three reasons.
First, $79.99 confirms that GTA 6 sits at the higher end of the current premium console market. For a game with this level of anticipation, many players expected a higher price, but others see the jump from the previous $70 standard as another sign that major releases are becoming more expensive.
Second, the $99.99 Ultimate Edition has made the usual premium-edition debate more visible. Its content is not presented as a separate expansion, but as a bundle of vehicles, locations, cosmetic options and upgrades integrated into the single-player story.
Third, Rockstar’s physical release has frustrated collectors. The boxed version of GTA 6 will contain a digital download code rather than a disc. That means buyers can still purchase a physical box from retailers, but they will not receive a playable disc inside it.
For players who value game preservation, resale or simply owning a full disc-based copy, that is the more significant controversy. The box is physical, but the game itself is still a digital entitlement tied to a platform account.
Platforms and editions

Rockstar has confirmed GTA VI platforms for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, designed to take full advantage of next-gen hardware. There will be no old-gen versions for PS4 or Xbox One.
So far, there’s no official confirmation of GTA 6 on PC, but history suggests it’s only a matter of time. Previous titles like GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on PC roughly a year after their console debut. Analysts believe Rockstar may repeat this strategy to drive record sales across both audiences.
GTA 6 trailers — what we’ve seen so far
The first official trailer, released on December 5, 2023, reintroduced players to Vice City, now glowing with neon lights, palm trees, and social-media-inspired chaos. Set to Tom Petty’s Love Is a Long Road, it surpassed 100 million views within 24 hours.
The second trailer, released on May 6, 2025, gave us a deeper look at the game’s tone and characters. It introduced Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, a criminal couple navigating life in the fictional state of Leonida. Filled with high-speed chases, robberies, and glimpses of nightlife, the GTA 6 trailer 2 confirmed Rockstar’s shift toward a more cinematic and emotional narrative.

Map and setting — exploring Vice City and beyond
The GTA 6 map takes place in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida, featuring an expanded Vice City as its centerpiece. Beyond the urban sprawl, players can expect tropical keys, rural farmlands, and vast wetlands reminiscent of the Everglades.
The map will include towns like Ambrosia, Port Gellhorn, and Leonida Keys. Leaks show a living world with dense traffic, wildlife, and evolving regions that may expand post-launch through regular updates —an approach designed to keep the Grand Theft Auto VI map growing over time.
Characters and story details

Rockstar confirmed that Lucia and Jason will be the dual protagonists of Grand Theft Auto VI. Lucia, a Latina woman recently released from prison, and Jason, her ex-military partner, form a partnership that mixes love, loyalty, and crime.
Inspired by Bonnie & Clyde, GTA VI explores moral choices, betrayal, and survival in a sun-drenched but dangerous world. The game also marks a milestone for the series: Lucia will be the first playable female lead in Grand Theft Auto history.

GTA 6 is no longer just a release-date story
The key GTA 6 question is no longer whether Rockstar can meet its 2026 target. It is now whether players will accept the way Rockstar is packaging its biggest release: a higher-priced standard edition, a premium upgrade path and a physical box without a disc.
The game’s scale will ultimately decide whether that pricing feels justified. But before launch, Rockstar has already made one thing clear: GTA 6 is not only trying to be the biggest game of 2026. It is also testing how much modern players are willing to pay for the next Grand Theft Auto.
